Description
[edit | edit source]Griffons (or griffins) are mythical creatures with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. Their fur and wings are red-gold in colour. They are the symbolic animals of the deity Praios and the heraldic animals of the Middenrealm. They are intelligent beings who can speak many languages and are immune to magic.
Known griffons: Garafan, Scraan
The Griffon in Storytelling
[edit | edit source]In ancient mythology, the griffin is of greek origin. It is a symbol of divine power and a guardian of treasures. Combining the characteristics of the lion and the eagle, it represents courage, boldness, and strength. In heraldry, its image is often used to signify the bravery and strength of a warrior or family.
TDE uses many of these aspects. As divine creatures of Praios, they embody truth, order and justice (AB). These creatures adhere to strict standards. As with their earthly counterparts, it should be impossible for a griffon to support heroes who have not earned its respect. Contact with a griffon should be rare and special anyway.
Earthly Affairs
[edit | edit source]TDE5 prefers the spelling griffon with -o- over griffin. However, both seem to be accepted.
